Prove’s Tim Brown Explains the Essential Role of FIDO and Passkeys in Mitigating Deepfake Fraud
The rise of deepfake attacks has caused alarm across various industries, particularly in biometrics, as criminals increasingly exploit AI technology to perpetrate fraud. These attacks range from large-scale corporate theft to individual-targeted voice scams, highlighting the extensive reach and severity of the problem. This has underscored the critical need for technological defenses capable of keeping up with the rapidly evolving tactics of criminals.
In a recent overview of this growing issue, Biometric Update spoke with Tim Brown, Prove’s global identity officer to get his insights on why this is happening and what can be done to mitigate it. Speaking from a recent FIDO Alliance gathering (Brown was also recently named to the FIDO Alliance board of directors), he spotlighted the significance of standards in building a strong foundation of security. “...standards like FIDO and passkeys have a strong role to play in…making sure that you’re protecting your accounts from phishing. Getting rid of passwords altogether will go a long way to helping individuals at least know that they’re interacting with a legitimate website.”
Brown acknowledges that fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their use of deepfake tools. He emphasizes the necessity for circles of trust to expand in response to this threat, while also emphasizing the importance of strengthening them.
“If you’re not a company that is actually involved in the creation of credentials in some form or fashion and you’re basically relying on your own type of AI modeling to build your document libraries and models and look for variances, then it’s actually really scary that something like this is happening right now.”
